Baix Ebre is structured around the final course of the most voluminous river in the Peninsula.
The Ebro crosses the region and, before flowing into the sea, forms the Ebro Delta, one of Europe's most important wetlands. Declared a Natural Park and Biosphere Reserve, it is an essential destination for ornithology lovers. This protected area is a mosaic of rice paddies, lagoons, beaches, and riverside forests, home to flamingos, herons, and ospreys. The influence of the river and the sea softens temperatures in the low area, creating an ideal microclimate for rice, citrus fruits, and vegetables.
But Baix Ebre is not just the Delta.
Inland, the region rises towards the Cardó mountain ranges and the Els Ports massif, a mountain barrier that separates the coast from the lands of Matarraña and Bajo Aragón. In this transition between plain and mountain lies Paüls, a village of narrow streets and stone houses at an altitude of about 378 meters, facing south and protected by Els Ports. The Mediterranean climate with mountain influence offers mild winters and dry summers, ideal for olive and almond cultivation. The cultural heritage of Baix Ebre is rich and diverse.
Tortosa, its capital, preserves an impressive monumental complex: the Santa María Cathedral, the Suda castle, the Royal Colleges, and the Jewish quarter. The inland towns, such as Paüls, maintain their traditional architecture, with dry stone terraces, centuries-old olive trees, and almond trees. In spring, cherry blossoms dye the hillsides white; Paüls is known for its cherry production and its annual fair dedicated to this fruit.
Gastronomy is another great attraction.
Delta rice, seafood from Sant Carles de la Ràpita or l'Ampolla, extra virgin olive oil from the Baix Ebre-Montsià PDO, mountain honeys, and wines from the neighboring Terra Alta form an authentic pantry. In Paüls and its surroundings, Arbequina olive oil, almonds, and honey are star products, traditionally made on small farms like ours. A few kilometers away, the Ebro invites canoeing or cycling along the Baix Ebre Greenway. And the sea, with the Delta beaches and the coves of l'Ametlla de Mar, is less than an hour's drive away.
