Paüls' Festa Major 2026 is now history. For several days, this small municipality in Baix Ebre put aside the usual silence of its streets to dress up and celebrate as only villages know how. The event, in honor of Sant Roc —the town's patron saint, whose feast day is commemorated on August 16—, once again demonstrated that Paüls is much more than a dot on the map: it is a place with soul, tradition, and a captivating landscape.
A Village Among Mountains
Paüls stands in the Ports de Beseit massif, integrated into the Parc Natural dels Ports, one of the great natural areas of southern Catalonia. Its more than 35,000 hectares of Mediterranean forests, deep ravines, and emblematic fauna—such as the ibex or the Bonelli's eagle—surround the municipality and give it a unique personality. And it is precisely this rural and mountainous identity that permeates each of the events of its Festa Major.
Six Days of Festivities and Tradition
The 2026 edition once again articulated the classic elements of summer major festivals in the villages of Baix Ebre. Religious acts occupied a central place, with the solemn mass in honor of Sant Roc and the patron saint's procession that toured the streets of the center until reaching the saint's hermitage, located about three kilometers from the village. The devotion of the people of Paüls was evident in every corner of the municipality.
But the festival was not just solemnity.
The Plaça Major became the epicenter of community life: the popular vermouth after mass brought together neighbors and visitors, while communal outdoor lunches and dinners highlighted local products. Evenings brought concerts by local and regional groups, and open-air dances with Catalan orchestras kept young and old dancing until the early hours of the morning.
The youngest were not left behind either. Children's and family activities—inflatable castles, workshops, and entertainment—ensured that the festival was for all ages.
The Festa de Sant Roc and the Jota de Paüls
One of the most special moments of these major festivals came with the Festa de Sant Roc, which is celebrated annually around August 16 within the framework of the Festa Major. The hermitage of Sant Roc, located in a natural setting with ancient trees and a joyful fountain, hosted a unique day: dry-stone constructions for sharing food, ritual races, and a popular dance of jotas and sardanas to the rhythm of the band. The Paüls jota, which is passed down by ear from parents to children without written sheet music, is the soul of this celebration.
A Landscape That Embraces Everything
What makes Paüls' Festa Major special is its connection to the surroundings. The Parc Natural dels Ports is not just the scenery: it is part of the festival. Activities linked to natural heritage—guided routes through the park's paths, excursions to unique formations like the Roca Foradada—allowed neighbors and visitors to rediscover the beauty surrounding the village.
