The history of the olive tree in Paüls: centuries of landscape, labor, and tradition

La historia del olivo en Paüls: siglos de paisaje, trabajo y tradición

In Paüls, in the heart of the Baix Ebre and at the foot of the Ports, the olive tree is an inseparable part of the landscape and the agricultural memory of the municipality. Its hillsides, terraces, and drylands preserve the traces of generations of farmers who have worked a mountainous land, adapting to its conditions and making the most of its resources. However, reconstructing who planted the first olive trees and exactly when this cultivation began remains a task pending further historical research.

A crop rooted in the territory

The Paüls City Council describes the olive tree as a crop present "since time immemorial." According to data published on their municipal website, the district has 1,142 hectares of cultivated land, 708 of which are dedicated to olive groves. Although these figures correspond to the available municipal information and do not in themselves allow for the reconstruction of the historical evolution of the plantations, they show the importance that this tree has attained in local agriculture.

To understand its origins, it is necessary to place Paüls in the context of the Terres de l’Ebre. Historical studies on the agrarian landscape of this region indicate that olive cultivation expanded progressively from the Modern Age, with particularly significant growth during the 18th and 19th centuries. In inland areas, where dryland farming predominated, olive trees gained prominence along with other traditional crops, such as carob, almond, and grapevine.

The 19th century: the expansion of the olive groves

During the 19th century, agriculture continued to be the main economic activity for many rural municipalities in the Terres de l’Ebre. In dryland areas, cultivated surfaces were expanded through the clearing of land and the construction of terraces, supported in many places by dry-stone walls.

Paüls, located in a mountainous environment with limited flat land, offered conditions in which the olive tree could play a fundamental role. Its resistance and adaptation to Mediterranean terrain made it a highly valuable agricultural resource for peasant families.

It is reasonable to place the development of the Paüls olive groves within this regional expansion. However, documentation has not yet been located to determine which plots were planted first, which farmers drove their expansion, or which families were primarily responsible for that transformation.

From family labor to oil production

Olive cultivation required constant dedication throughout the year: pruning, land maintenance, tree care, harvesting the olives, and transporting them to milling sites. Oil production thus connected agricultural work with technical knowledge and the community's economic activities.

By the beginning of the 20th century, oil was already an important product for the agrarian economy of the Baix Ebre as a whole. However, to know precisely how production was organized in Paüls, it would be necessary to locate records of oil mills, agricultural statistics, notarial documents, and testimonies regarding the former producers.

The first decades of the 20th century were marked by economic and social changes that affected the Catalan countryside. The difficulties of dryland farming, the lack of labor, and the consequences of the Civil War contributed to transforming many rural economies in the region.

A history yet to be reconstructed

The history of the olive tree in Paüls cannot be attributed, for the time being, to a single person or family documented in records. To make progress on this issue, it will be essential to consult the 19th-century land registries and tax rolls, notarial protocols, wills, and property inventories preserved in historical archives.

These documents could reveal the names of the owners of old olive groves, the extent of their estates, and the dates when certain plots were already dedicated to cultivation. Combined with the oral memory of the municipality’s families, they would allow for the reconstruction of an essential part of local agricultural history.

While that research continues, the olive trees of Paüls represent much more than a traditional crop: they are the living testimony of a centuries-old relationship between people and the land, built through the effort of generations and still visible in the municipality’s landscape.
